Timeline: PRE: Winter Soldier. Post: The Dark World
A mission request. A deal struck. The soldier blinked as he was unfrozen from the icy depths that HYDRA had kept him in. His mind was blank, numb as he moved as he was told to. There was no emotion on his face, he was devoid of it. He wasn't a person, he was a weapon. A weapon to be borrowed. A thing to be loaned out and controlled.
"Move."
He did as he was told, being shuffled along to the agreed upon meeting spot. Once there, they waited for the Asgardian to arrive. There were not many things that HYDRA was afraid of. A God was one of those things. The soldier stood there, looking down at his feet, standing until he would be called into service. He didn't wonder anything. He didn't think. All he did was react.
And now he stood there, waiting to react.

And yet, here he is again, on Midgard. Not because he is bored, mind you, but because he knows Thanos is coming for him. For everyone, really, but Loki is mostly interested in himself, as usual. To stop him, the only way is to be more powerful than him. Loki has already recovered the Tesseract from the vaults of Asgard, and now he's investigating another infinity stone, which is said to be on Midgard.
That's how he stumbles upon HYDRA, who is also looking for the stone. Loki does not like them much but they think they can manipulate him, and he lets them. There is one thing they are useful for, however. Henchmen. Loki can't use Asgard's army for this, and there is a lot of work he is not willing to do himself. So he demands help, and they agree to lend him their best weapon. A soldier with no name, they say. A completely compliant Asset, loyal to an extent even the Tesseract would not manage.
Loki is not sure what to expect when he strides into the hangar, but what greets him is deadly silence and uneasy soldiers who keep glancing worriedly at a man standing there. He has a mask on his face, long hair, and a metal arm. His stance is wide and rigid and he looks perfectly still in a way that's almost unnatural. Loki makes sure not to turn his back on him as a simpering HYDRA agent comes to explain to him how the Asset works, what can be asked of him, and when Loki should return him.
He nods, stepping closer slowly, his eyes sharp. He considers the Asset with cool curiosity for a few seconds. "Come," he says, a crisp order, and turns around to stride back to his plane, hoping the soldier will follow.

As the Asgardian approached, Bucky stared at him with wide eyes. He knew nothing about him. He didn't get briefed. He didn't need to be. He went where they sent him. He did what he was told. There was no more information that that. When he was done, he was put back on ice. This time? This time he hoped that maybe he didn't get frozen again.
"Come."
The soldier follows him without question. His head tilted to the side and he eyed Loki up and down, taking his only minute to do so from behind. The man was tall, most likely strong. He regarded the Asgardian, summing up everything he could about him and who might win in a fight.
He had some thoughts on exit strategy and fight plans, but he didn't voice them.

"Sit," he stated, in the same commanding, flat voice than before. He glanced at a row of seats nearby. "We are not close to our destination. I will tell you when you are needed."
And that was it. Loki discarded the Soldier for the time being, stepping into the cockpit to discuss coordinates with the pilots.
no subject
His head nods and he sat down in the row of seats that Loki motioned to. He doesn't look up at the Asgardian as he sits, staring at the seat in front of him as he leans back against the seat, testing it. He doesn't watch Loki wander away or glance around.
He just sits there, staring forward. When he's needed, he'll hear it. Loki will call to him. For one brief moment, he actually has thoughts. He wonders why the men who order him around would give him away. Would he go back after a time? Did he now belong to the tall man?
He didn't dare voice these thoughts. He knew better.

He lets the man fall to the ground, keeping his eyes on the Asset. "How deep does your loyalty to HYDRA run?" He asks, calmly though their plane is now obviously going to crash in a few minutes.

If any of this bother's the winter soldier, it doesn't show on his face. His eyebrow raises, the only sign of his body twitching at all.
The Winter soldier looked up at Loki. "Ready to comply." He moved forward, his head bowing slightly. He wasn't sure what was going on, but he could see that the plane was going down. Killing the man in front of him wouldn't do anything. He had to consider all his options, at least until he could get out of the plane and to a better location with more exit strategies.
"There are two parachutes by the door. We should exit now."
no subject
He did not believe he would earn the Assett's loyalty so easily, but this was a good start. "We won't need those," he stated, his eyes suddenly blazing with greenish light. "I can take us where we need to be." He held out his hand, his eyebrows arching. "Here."
no subject
The man looked smug. To be honest, the man looked very cocky. Still, he assumed how much better it would appear if he went along with things. At least for now.
He wondered what Loki meant. Why wouldn't they need the parachutes or the plane for that matter. The soldier did seem bothered, but only on the inside. One hand reached for Loki's and threaded their fingers together.

Watching the human before him, Loki could see he was trying to reign his suspicion in and it made him grin, amused. The Soldier apparently retained enough intelligence to doubt a direct order, when it seemed absurd. The fact that he did not question said order, however, and took Loki's hand, was also satisfying.
"Shield your eyes," he stated, and reached for his magic, letting it take them where they needed to be. Which was, apparently, in the middle of a forest in a different timezone, darkness pressing around them until a small greenish light appeared in the palm of Loki's hand. "There is a base, nearby." Loki stated, his voice quiet but sharp. "I want something from it. You will provide a distraction at the East entrance. I shan't need more than a few minutes. You'll know when I'm done."
no subject
He’s not a fool. He sees the threat in Loki, especially now that he has seen the magic that he can wield. He says and does nothing, simply watching for now, learning as he went. Of the two options currently presented to him, the Asgardian seemed like a better fit than HYDRA. He could at least hope that Loki wouldn’t try to wipe him after his next mission.
Instantly, the Asset went into his Winter Soldier line of thinking. “Need to see the base and the perimeter,” he murmured softly. “Need to get a proper head count of numbers as well as potential exits. Blocking them. For a small distraction, should not need more than one, maybe two exits corrupted. Others will come, depending on the noise.” He looks around, eyes narrowing, until he sees the barest of lights in the distance to his right. He starts to head that way. Any base that size would be hard to hide in the darkest of the dark. He motions for Loki to follow him.
“Will need an exit plan once you have retrieved your…” He paused. “Your retrieval.” He shrugged his shoulders and kept moving forward. “I can provide cover and distraction, but I may need an extraction if numbers are high.” He turned to look at Loki, glancing at him as he walked and spoke. This would be a test for him as well. If he wanted the Asset’s loyalty, he couldn’t leave him behind or put him in danger. If he did, the Asset wouldn’t’ think twice about betraying him.

(On the matter of wiping: Loki knew of it and thought it was rather barbaric. Not to mention possibly detrimental to the Asset's sanity, on the long run. As long as the Soldier was loyal, there would be no attempt at erasing his memory.)
He nodded and followed briskly, leaning a little closer to listen to what the Soldier was saying. "The matter is time sensitive, but not overtly so. You may take a few minutes to map the base and evaluate the number of soldiers present," he allowed, keeping his voice low. He tilted his head to the side, considering it.
"Once I have what I came for, I will come and retrieve you," he stated, calmly. He corners of his mouth curved up, just a little. "You will see me." Once stealth would no longer be an issue, Loki would make sure everyone would. "Come to me and I shall take you as I leave."
no subject
The base was out in the open, so sneaking up on the exit was not going to work. "Those gates?" He raised his good arm and pointed. "Most likely, they have more than one of those. The base i out in the open, so stealth will be irrelevant. Best defense is go in first as a distraction."
He turned to face Loki. "Your... Magic? What brought us here. Use that to get in after I have them focused on me." While it was rare for him to speak with HYDRA, it wasn't that he didn't know how. He just never had a desire to talk. It was easier to take orders from them. This person, however, seemed different to him. He couldn't put his finger on it. There was just something off. He had no desire to keep quiet.
His eyes narrowed at Loki. "Don't leave me behind." If it sounded like a warning, it was meant to.

The Asset's plan was sound, and close enough to what Loki had already decided to do that he did not dispute it, merely nodding. "I can make myself invisible well-enough," he agreed, smirking a little. Not for very long, but for long enough to get into the base. He glanced back towards the building, his eyes narrowed as he took it in one last time, reviewed the plan, and deemed it worthy.
"I will not," he stated when the Asset warned him not to leave him behind. "You have my word." He leaned in, his eyes intent. That was not a lie, Loki fully intended to come and recover the Soldier. "Now go and show me what you can do," he ordered, almost playfully.

“South wall! We’ve a potential breech at the south wall. All available men to the wall!”
Bucky grinned, watching the men as they lingered, unsure what to do. If they wanted to get to him, they would have to open the gate to do so. Only two guards were actually patrolling on the outside of the perimeter. Approaching Bucky, the asset knelt down, kicking out behind him with one leg while his arm reached out forward towards the other. The asset listened as the man who attacked him from behind went down. His face was cool, calm and neutral with no hint of emotion as he grabbed the guard in front him, swung him around like a rag doll and used his body to beat up the other guard.
When they were laying on the ground, a broken and bloody mess, he moved forward. He could hear the other men scrambling. Just like he assumed they would, one gate started to rise so the men could arguably keep him out. More like keeping them in, he thought to himself.
The asset’s arms flew as he ran in, just swinging his arms like daggers and taking out every potential threat that he could. He was able to slowly move forward, a few steps at a time as he kept being surrounded. For him, this part of the mission wasn’t about success. It was only about survival and biding his time.
He hoped he wasn’t wrong about the man he’d met today. The man who might just be able to save him. If you believe in those type of things.

Loki actually grinned as he watched the Soldier move closer with purpose and easily cut through the guards, disabling them in a matter of seconds, with clean, sparing movements. There was an almost immediate commotion, and much yelling as the guards and soldiers from within the base gathered around the south wall to try to stop the attacker. Just as planned.
Looking away regretfully, Loki went around the base as silently and swiftly as he could, watching as he took in the wall the North wall was mostly deserted. A quick invisibility spell concealed him from view until he reached the gate, stabbing the guard cleanly through the heart and using his pass to open the door.
The corridor he stepped in was empty too, and alarms were blaring all around, unpleasantly shrill. Loki strode purposefully towards the center of the base, finding the door of the containment unit he was looking for and using magic to melt its lock. It triggered more alarms but he ignored it. Once inside, it didn't take long to find what he wanted and take it, vanishing it to one of his magic pockets.
Time for a rescue, then. The Asset would be on his own for no more than five minutes before Loki emerged from the South Gate, blasting a dozen of guards away with magic, one bullet ricocheting from his metal armour. “Tedious,” he decided as he advanced, his magic slamming into what was left of the guards and sending them flying. He held his hand out to the Soldier as more gunshots were fired from inside the base, using magic to whirl them away from the scene.

A few minutes, he kept telling himself. Just a few minutes and he'd be free of this. As long as he wasn't backstabbed or betrayed.
And then Loki was there. In front of him. A shiver ran through him as he reached out, easily taking Loki's hand in his and holding on tight. There was something about him that the Asset couldn't put his finger on. His eyes closed and he clung to Loki's hand as they suddenly flew through the magic.
There was the smallest, tiniest bit of the Asset that was curious. What had he practically risked his life for the man in front of him to get back. Something very sentimental, perhaps? Either way, at least he'd done his part of the job. He could only hope that he wouldn't be frozen again.

He stepped away, carefully setting down the box he had been carrying on a nearby table and smoothly removing his cape, draping it over the nearest chair. He glanced over to the Asset then, studying him in the way he would examine his knives after a battle to see if they had been damaged.
"Are you injured?" he inquired, sounding almost curious about it. He thought for a second. "What do you require? Sustenance?" Midgardians ate several times a day, Loki knew.
no subject
"Food," he said softly. After fighting the way that he did, he always seemed tired. They had told him that his metabolism and the way he fights would elevate it and he could see the correlation with his hunger. Often, he grew hungry and needed to refuel. To him, food was just that, sustenance that was able to keep him going. He didn't derive pleasure in it, he just needed it.
Bucky moved over to the window, staring out at the scene below. It was like something he'd never seen before, and yet it felt odd to him, like some distant memory. He wasn't always an asset, a soldier that did the bidding of HYDRA, and yet it was all he knew.
He was mildly curious as to what was in the box, but he wasn't in any position to ask.
"Injuries are sustainable. I will need a first aid kit and some bandages." If Loki can do any sort of healing spells, the soldier isn't aware of that kind of magic. He knows that he has a couple marks that could be bleeding. There would definitely be bruises tomorrow. And yet, in his mind, he still came out the victor. They had been successful and he'd gotten away.
Mission accomplished.

"A shower, I think, too," he stated pointedly, arching his eyebrows. Not that the Asset smelled bad exactly, but he was indeed covered in blood and dirt. "There is a kit in the bathroom. I trust you will manage?" While Loki would help if required, he had no particular desire to play nursemaid.
The Soldier would bathe, lick his wounds, eat, and then sleep in the guest room. It would be a little like having a pet, Loki thought. A dangerously clever and violent one. The only kind worth having.

His clothes came off easily enough, with only the occasional wince. The man was not wrong, he was messy, blood and dirt staining his clothes and his skin. He moves easily enough, stripping down and turning on the shower before he steps inside. The water laps at him, washing away the grime of the encounter.
When he's done, he uses the kit to dress his wounds, nothing deep enough that it would need stitches. He frowns, walking out of the bedroom naked, not having any clean clothes to change into. The asset finds Loki, looking at him with a very neutral expression. "Clothes?"
If the man wanted a pet, he would have the biggest doberman HYDRA had created.

Loki gave the man a perfunctory once-over, not lingering but still looking at his naked body squarely, before he met his eyes. "Preferably," he drawled in answer, giving the Soldier a thin smirk. "We will see about getting you your own tomorrow. In the mean time, you may borrow some of mine." Loki would make good on that, offering a green tunic and comfortable sleeping trousers in a fancy, slightly silky material.
"Room service has brought food," he added when the Asset was dressed, leading the way back to the living room. "Eat." He took the book with him, opening it again as he sat at the table, away from the food.

He knew better.
He had thoughts. He had questions. None of them were things he would voice. He tried to see the name of the book, but that book wasn't the type to have the name on the cover.
When he was finished, he rose from the table. Moving over to a large window, he gazed out and glanced at the world below him. He didn't try to do the dishes, though he would have if Loki hadn't said room service to him. His mind whirled but he didn't linger at the window long.
The asset moved over to the couch and blinked at it. Wordlessly, he bent over and pushed the sofa up against the wall, so that nobody could sneak up on him in his sleep. When he was done, he laid down, instantly assuming that was where he was supposed to bed for the night. His eyes closed and he curled up against one of the pillows, laying on his side with his back against the sofa.
If the man calling the shots wanted him for something, he needed to be rested. Unless the man had other tasks for him.

Loki did not look up from his book while the Soldier was eating, a furrow appearing between his eyebrows after a while. The book brought complications. As always. He glanced over to the Soldier when he stood up to have a look outside, letting him take in the view. He didn't say anything about which city they were in, though he would have answered that particular question had the Asset voiced it. He followed with sharp eyes as the Soldier pushed the sofa against the wall and curled there to sleep. Loki would have given him the guest bedroom with no concerns (he wasn't using it) but he didn't correct him, letting him rest.
After a while, Loki got up quietly, stepping closer and watching the Soldier's prone body with his head tilted to the side curiously. He knew the man wasn't sleeping, or would wake as soon as he spoke up. "I am headed out. You may sleep until tomorrow morning. Take a blanket if you are cold. Order more food if you are hungry," he stated, his voice quiet but stern. He gave the Asset a look, making sure he was understood, and then let his magic take him away, leaving him alone in the suite.

Making sure the room looked undisturbed, the Asset grabbed a blanket and went back to sleep. He did as he was asked, as he was ordered to do. When he woke, unsure if Loki was there or not, he ordered the same list of everything that had come the day before. The asset would wash it down with black coffee and wonder if he’d need more clothes today.
A part of him wondered many things. Where he was? Would the trickster come back? Would he involve the asset in on his plans? Doubtful, he thought to himself. He was a weapon. Not a friend. Not a partner. The only thing he could do was lay there and kill things when he woke up. It was almost as bad as being frozen. Almost. Still, he was able to quiet his mind enough to get some sleep at least.
no subject
Morning came and still no sign of Loki would be seen. No noise was heard coming from his room and, if the Asset dared to peek, he would find it empty. It was almost noon when Loki reappeared, bringing with him the smell of charred plastic and blood, as well as a violent burst of magic that made all the furniture in the room rattle.
Loki himself fell back against the nearest wall, blood dripping down his face and from his chest, his skin ashen and his eyes brimming with white-gold energy. He slowly slid down the wall, leaving a trail of too-black blood in his wake and snarling at the Asset as he coughed painfully, taking rattling breaths in.

Moving over to Loki, the Asset knelt down in front of him. And waited. He would help Loki up, give him first aid, whatever the man required of him. If he asked. He would not presume anything. He would not say anything unless he was spoken to. And yet, he was there if Loki needed him.
Waiting.
He watched Loki, patiently, wordlessly watching him. He could smell the blood and see how he was hurting. And yet, he did not make a move before he was allowed to.

"Shards," Loki managed after a few seconds of distrustful staring, the words coming out low and ragged. "They are poisoned. Need to remove the armour and pick them out, or I won't be able to heal," he disclosed, tugging at his own shoulder plate with his good arm, wrenching it away with a hiss.
no subject
He doesn't want to slice it with a knife but he will if he has to.
Making sure Loki is leaning against the small kitchenette counter of the suite, he steps away and runs into the bathroom. He comes out with towels, unsure if there was a first aid kit around. In his mind, Bucky knew they could call down to the hotel desk for one, probably, but he also didn't want to alert anyone to anything being wrong with Loki.
"Can clean. Make makeshift bandage wraps with the towels. Will need something to clean you out." Not knowing anything about the man in front of him, Bucky acts as if the man is a human, at least until he's informed otherwise.
no subject
While Bucky was in the bathroom, he managed to remove most of the armor, letting the bloodied metal pieces fall to the ground. The under-armor was easy enough to unlace but Loki had to tear through his silky under shirt as he couldn't lift his arms to remove it.
"I don't need that," he answered, leaning back and watching the Asset down his nose, his face wan. "Do as you're told. Remove the shards and I will heal." He demonstrated, removing one of the bigger pieces of shrapnel embedded in his shoulder and flicking it away with a hiss, his fingers stinging. "Don't use your hands. They're poisoned."
